Media Temple VS. HostGator VS. KnownHost VPS: So Bad Experience of MT & HG

network-server-icon Choosing the best web hosting service is one of the most crucial decisions for most of bloggers. With a poor web hosting service provider it can be a nightmare, I was using Hostgator Shared Hosting Package since 2008, however, my nightmare began on Jan 12, 2011, so I purchased Hostgator VPS Level 2 & Level 3, Media Temple VPS(Dedicated-Virtual Server), Unfortunately, the nightmare couldn’t be stopped until I’m using Knownhost VPS(VS2). So it’s not a tutorial on how to choose the best VPS provider, I only want to record and share my experience which will help you get started…

Provider Name VPS Plan Disk Memory CPU BW Price(plus control panel) Support Level Recommend
Knownhost VS2 40GB 768MB Equal Share 2000GB $36 *1 Professional KnownHost-VPS
Hostgator Level 3 30GB 768MB 1.13GHZ 500GB $49.95  *2 Babyish hostgator-star
MT DV 3.5 30GB 512MB 8% 1024GB $42.5 *3 Normal Media Temple

*2: include cPanel, $39.95 + $10 = $49.95

Hostgator  hostgator-star

Oversell on Hostgator is obvious since 2011, and my experience told me, even their best technical support only know copy&paste(very horrible customer service line). If the traffic of your sites are less 1K unique IP daily and needn’t any technical support from hosting provider, then Hostgator also should be recommended, else, stay away from them!

I received an alert email from HostGator(Ticket ID: KHF-14526255) on Jan 12, 2011, was told some scripts on my account(shared hosting) be suspended:

Unfortunately, we were forced to suspend the script

"/home/my account/public_html/ntt.cc folder/index.php",
"/home/my account/public_html/flexman.info folder/index.php",
"/home/my account/public_html/blog.minidx.com folder/index.php" as it was causing a high load on the server, and due to this affecting all of the other accounts on the system, we were forced to take immediate action for the health of the server.

We noticed that this is a WordPress blog, and recommend installing the plug-in W3-Total-Cache, and which helps to greatly reduce the CPU required to run a WordPress blog and can help you to have more traffic while using less CPU. You can also find some tips on how to optimize WordPress installations for use on shared servers here (http://return-true.com/2010/05/optimizing-wordpress-for-shared-hosting/). Please note that though this link provides information about WP-Super-Cache, the plug-in W3-Total-Cache can be setup to provide the same sort of caching with the page caching method "Disk (enhanced)". Also, we would strongly recommend that you enable "Database Cache" and "Object Cache" in the plug-in’s settings for the best performance.

We will need you to update us with your IP address so that we can safely open access for you to make the needed changes to your site. Please let us know how you would like to proceed.

I thought it was caused the traffic grown of these sites(In fact have barely budged), that’s OK. So I installed W3-Total-Cache, then the scripts were re-actived:

I see that you’ve installed w3-total-cache. I’ve re-enabled your site completely. We will continue to monitor the server and will let you know if there are any further issues.

However, I received another alert email(Ticket ID:EDD-14526878) soon on the same day, Jan 12, 2011, and was told /home/my account/public_html/ntt.cc folder/index.php was disabled again.

We had to disable /home/my account/public_html/ntt.cc folder/index.php again on the server, as it was continuing to cause a high load on the server.

You need to check the queries running on this site, and also make sure w3 total cache is fully activated with the database and object caching enabled as well.
Also make sure you have removed all unnecessary and resource intensive plugins from this site.

Hostgator support continued to give me the advices about w3 total cache, but from the logs which Hostgator send to me, I think probably the the problem was caused by another plugin namd Popularity Contest. I did nothing of w3 total cache but I disabled the  Popularity Contest:

I have made the database and object caching enabled and disabled some
plugins.Could you check it again and reactive /home/my account/public_html/ntt.cc folder/index.php ?

Not sure Hostgator support really check the change of my account, they enabled this script again:

Hello,

I have enalbed the index.php file for this domain.

This time, Yes, I thought it should be there were something wrong of some plugins on my sites, although they had been working fine over 15 months on this server. So that’s OK.

The nightmare is continued…

On Jan 13, 2011 I was told the script "/home/my account/public_html/ntt.cc folder/index.php " was suspended again! HostGator support gave me the advice to disable "Preview Mode" of W3-Total-Cache:

I apologize, but I was forced to suspend the script "/home/my account/public_html/ntt.cc folder/index.php " as it was causing a high load on the server, and due to it affecting all of the other accounts on the system, I forced to take immediate action for the health of the server.

It appears that you are using W3-Total-Cache. We would strongly recommend that you enable "Database Cache" and "Object Cache" in the plug-in’s settings for the best performance, as well as ensuring that "Preview Mode" is disabled. If this is already enabled, it is likely that you will need to disable other resource intensive plug-ins, or identify an issue such as a large percentage of 404 errors, as these default to redirect to the main script of WordPress.

Also, please note that you should still be able to access the admin panel, and most of the site to make any modifications that you might need.

If you reply back to this with your IP address (http://www.hostgator.com/ip.shtml) we will be more than happy to go ahead enable HTTP access for you, so that you can safely work on the script without it causing further issues.

Once you have made the changes, please respond to this with the changes that you have made, so that we can re-enable this site, and watch for further problems, or see if there might be further suggestions that we can make to help lower the load that this site causes.

Probably you may noticed that different supports process the same ticket—It’s OK, but the successor didn’t read anything before.

Okay, I thought probably HostGator Shared Hosing couldn’t endure the 3K traffic(wordpress script) recently, although the same site, with the same plugins, almost the same traffic had been working fine on this server over 15 months! Based the experience of the past 15 months, I thought Hostgator should be reliable. So I purchased HostGator VPS(VPS-27107, Level 2),

Unfortunately, VPS-27107 wasn’t able to setup correctly. I submitted a ticket, HostGator helped to rebuilt another one(VPS-27118). Then I migrated ntt.cc to this VPS and left others on the share hosting.

I thought it should be OK since that time. But, the nightmare is continued…

I received the alert from HostGator(Ticket ID: HAT-14557719), was told  the script "/home/my account/public_html/themedaily.com folder/demo/index.php" was suspended. And HG support asked me to install W3-Total-Cache for this site. In fact, themedaily.com/demo is based wordpress too, and the traffic is less than 10 unique IP daily!!

Hello,

Unfortunately, we were forced to suspend the script "/home/my account/public_html/themedaily.com folder/demo/index.php" as it was causing a high load on the server, and due to this affecting all of the other accounts on the system, we were forced to take immediate action for the health of the server.

But okay, I thought HostGator technical was reliable, I followed this advice.

But…, yes, I think you have known, it’s not the end, the nightmare is continued.

I was told the script /home/my account/public_html/enjoymotocar.com folder/main.php was disabled on Feb 11, 2011.  The great HostGator support gave me some advice and  highly recommend me as below:

Hello,

I do apologise, but I was forced to suspend the script /home/my account/public_html/enjoymotocar.com folder/main.php as it was causing a heavy CPU load on our servers. The load it was causing was affecting all sites on the machine and I was forced to take immediate action to prevent this from happening.

It appears your site is a WordPress based blog with no caching enabled. I highly recommend to rectify this situation that you install some form of caching.
Some of our recommended caching mechanisms are:
* DB Cache Reloaded
* W3 Total Cache
* Super Cache
* Hyper Cache
Any of these caching mechanisms can help significantly. Please provide us your IP from http://www.hostgator.com/ip.shtml so we can allow you developmental access to your site to apply the proper caching for your blog.

I was very very confused. Because enjoymotocar/main.php based gallery2 script(http://gallery.menalto.com/), not WordPress. I was very confused why HostGator support could NOT distinguish wordpress or Gallery2 script, and how could HostGator support say it was wordpress based . I think it should be very simple. Or this one only copy the advice from others??? Anyway, I think HG support is great.

After I reply this ticket, HostGator support also gave me following advice:

Dear customer,

It appears that your modifications were successful.

I have removed all restrictions on your account at this time. We suggest that you enabler further caching as a step to prevent future suspensions.

Furthermore, It has been brought to our attention that your account has generated multiple and repeated TOS resource related tickets. Referenced below.

I’m very very confuse and can’t understand why the same sites without any change, worked fine before long time but caused TOS/CPU frequently since 2011.

At the same time, My HostGator VPS(Level 2) downed some times so I asked to upgrade my VPS to Level 3(Ticket ID: OFU-14637320), but Level 3 couldn’t help to my site—only one site, few traffic. So I decided to cancel my HostGator VPS.

I don’t know what I can do except say good-bye with Hostgator.

In additional: Refund to your Paypal or credit card from HostGator is not so easy. They more like refund the credit to your HostGator account.

Media Temple  Media Temple

I asked google and found many positive reviews similar Media Temple, Inc. is an industry-leading, privately held, profitable web hosting and software application services company based in Los Angeles, California. Since 1998.  Media Temple advertise with their big customers – but if you’re taking a "smaller" plan – don’t expect to have the reliability or speed their big customers get. Media Temple’s customer service line is better than Hostgator, but also horrible. Media Temple is not really reliable and often not fast, and this hosting is not worth a single penny paid— if you are not their big customers!

I purchased Media Temple Dedicated-Virtual(dv) 3.5(Order# 920890) with Plesk control panel and migrated ntt.cc to this VPS. I found phpMyAdmin couldn’t be reached from my domain, so I tried to submit a ticket 8:14 PM:

Hello, there

I have read the following help documents:
http://wiki.mediatemple.net/w/%28dv%29_4.0:PhpMyAdmin
http://wiki.mediatemple.net/w/%28dv%29:Migration_guide#Databases

But I found that click Domains >example.com > Databases > Database Name > DB Webadmin from my Plesk, it can NOT be redirect to phpMyAdmin. Could you help to check what’s the matter of my control panel?

Here is my CONTROL PANEL URL:

Best Regards & Thanks

I received the response at 9:34 PM:

You may need to disable your pop-up blocker, or allow pop-ups for this site. This may be why phpMyAdmin is not appearing when you attempt to load it. After accepting pop-ups, I was able to confirm that phpMyAdmin could load successfully.

“it requires the assistance of a Technical Support Representative” took over 12 hours. I received Chason C. (mt) Media Temple Customer Support response on Jan 17 2011, at 10:50 PM:

The issues you have been experiencing are most likely due to overuse of your server’s memory and processing resources. You can check this by looking at your Quality of Service Alerts in Plesk. To view these:

1.) Log in to Plesk using your ‘admin’ or ‘root’ user.
2.) Click on Virtuozzo in the left pane.
3.) Select the QoS Alerts button.

You will likely notice several yellow, red, and black alerts for "kmemsize" and "tcpsndbuf."

Kmemsize is the kernel memory of the server. This limit is closely tied to your CPU use, and is smaller than your RAM. Tcpsndbuf is the data being served by Apache. If Apache is trying to give too much to too many people at the same time, you can reach this limit.

The best way to determine why you are reaching this particular resource limit is to look at the traffic on all of your sites, especially which pages and files are being requested the most. For example, if hundreds of people are trying to view the same streaming video within a minute of each other, it’s probably this item that is causing you to reach the limit. Of course, it’s possible that the requests are spread out over many different items as well, which will make this more difficult to analyze.

View the raw access logs at /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/statistics/logs. For the graphed statistics, go to "domain.com/plesk-stat". You can turn on the statistics by going to the Domains tab, then the domain itself, then the Setup tool. If you have password protection on, you should log in with your Client login information for this site.

You may be able to identify a resource-heavy process and bring your resource use back down to normal levels. As a courtesy, (mt) Media Temple has provided a detailed troubleshooting article that will help you with this:

http://wiki.mediatemple.net/w/DV:Memory_optimization_and_troubleshooting

Please go through the troubleshooting steps in this article. It should help you get a basic idea of what is causing your issue, and may also help you pinpoint a specific script or website element that is your memory-hogging culprit.

Keep in mind, however, that this is a server-administration type task that is not supported by (mt) Media Temple. Our basic troubleshooting guide is helpful, but you will likely have to follow up with your system administrator for a more detailed evaluation of your server.

If, after an evaluation, you conclude that you cannot optimize further and that you need more server resources, you also have the option to upgrade to the next level of (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server.

The following articles may also help you:

So I ask MT something about CPU and memory limit:

So could you let me know how much GHZ of DV base plan?

I also noticed that there should only 512MB memory but in fact there are 894.7 MB. It’s great but why it’s different…

Chason C. (mt) Media Temple Customer Support:

It is difficult to give you an exact number on the amount of CPU you get, since you are on a virtualized server. The CPUs on your host server are Intel Xeon L5630 processors running at 2.13GHz. On a (dv) Base, you get about 8% of that processor time, although that number is burstable and will change depending on demand.

The reason you are seeing a different number for your total amount of RAM on the server, is that it will count your burstable level of RAM. While you are guaranteed a base level of 512MB of RAM, more memory will be made available to you on demand up to the limit you see reported. However, it is safest to keep your day to day operation on the server under the 512MB mark so that you don’t constantly run into memory shortages when that burstable RAM is not available.

Please let me know if there’s anything else I can answer for you regarding your (mt) Media Temple services.

I confirm it again:

Does that mean the CPU which I can use is: 2.13GHz * 8% or 2.13GHz * 8% * 4(4 cores)? and could you let me know how many percent of the DV Rage plan?

MT:

As I said, the exact CPU amount a bit of a fudge, as the virtualization server does not run your website at a particular CPU speed that would correspond to a certain GHz. You do receive the multi-tasking benefits of all 4 cores, so that 8% amount reflects the amount of processing power you get from 8% of the processing of the entire server.

The Rage would give you 12% of the CPU time.

I noticed there were many "black alerts" on "QoS Alerts" of the Quality of Service Alerts in Plesk, not sure I/YOU can really get 8% of the processing of the entire server, but it seems DV 3.5 plan can not support my site(only one site), although there are not so many traffics of this site. As a result:

1-st main issue: strict CPU limits, you can’t really use all memory which you get and slow support that answer you with ‘templated’ messages after 12hr or more of waiting even it’s urgent problem(but better than HostGator).

2-nd issue: slower hosting than HostGator.

In additional: Refund from Media Temple is simple and easy.

KnownHost KnownHost-VPS

I searched and found KnownHost was pretty reputable on WHT. But I was so disappointed for MediaTemple, I doubt about those good reviews. But when I tried to order their service, I found I could lean back and enjoy the ride…

knownhost-fully-managed-vps-specialists

Before I purchased KnownHost VPS, I submitted a ticket(Priority: Low) to confirm the CPU limit on Jan/30/2011 07:52 AM, I received the reply on Jan/30/2011 07:58 AM:

Hello,

We don’t limit the CPU as we use Virtuozzo and offer Equal Share CPU. This means you get an equal percentage of CPU compared to others on the machine and we put around 20 others but they don’t all request CPU at the same time. We use Dual CPU Quad Core Machines so very powerful so CPU isn’t an issue in most cases. You can actually burst the entire CPU of the physical machine we just don’t allow it for over 90 seconds or we may be in contact with you to help cut down CPU usage. It’s okay if it happens time to time but if a trend is happening we may email you. Any further questions let us know.

Regards,
Justin

I also submitted some tickets, the KnownHost Support can act quickly to research, confirm and resolve my issues. I received an “httpd on host failed” alert email(httpd automatically restart), then I submit the ticket(Ticket ID:151127) to confirm why on Feb/13/2011 06:23 AM:

KnownHost Support

It’s one by one, not copy something from knowladge database or something else. It’s really the support which I need.

  • One Server only around 20 VPS
  • Equal Share powerful  Dual CPU Quad Core
  • Very fast and professional support
  • Fast network speed and low ping(Texas or California Data Center)
  • Unimaginable stability and really fully managed VPS(Not such as HG or others…)
  • and more…

So what can I ask more?

Below is some FAQs about KnownHost which probably you are interesting in. You also can find more from KnownHost.

1. Which data center is better – Texas or California?

Knownhost offers a choice where you want to host your server – Texas or California, the help link describes them:

Besides the obvious difference in geographical location, their is a difference in bandwidth providers in each data center:
- in Texas a BGP blended mix of InterNap, Level3, Time Warner Telecom & XO Communications
- in California a BGP blended mix that consists of Qwest, Sprint, Level 3, Global Crossing, Savvis, PCCW, Tiscali and Teleglobe;

Another thing you may consider is in regards to the physical location of each data center. Based upon where you or potentially most of your customer base maybe located, you might considered one data center over the other based upon it’s proximity to you.

Texas Data Center IP Address : 65.99.213.7
California Data Center IP Address : 67.222.15.99

2.Which Control Panel

Cpanel, Plesk or DirectAdmin are control panels which are loaded on your server which help you manage your server is a user friendly manner. I strongly recommend Cpanel+WHM (costs $5 per month) control panel. Remember if you do not buy a control panel, you are self managed.

3. Does KH prices include VAT tax?

Our prices do not include VAT. If you are required to submit this tax, please follow your normal procedure.

4. Does KH  offer a money-back guarantee?

Yes, all our hosting packages include a 30 day unconditional money back guarantee. Domain purchases are not eligible for refunds. (Please note: Only new customers are eligible for our 30 day money back guarantee.)

5. How long does it take for my account to be activated?

Your account is normally setup within 3 hrs but we guarantee within 24 hrs from the time you place the order. This is due to the fact that each order will need to be manually checked to prevent fraud. You will receive an email from KnownHost once your ord.

    glad to c u get a stable host :)
I also own a VPS with KH,
    and their support is superb!

at the same time going to try servint and wiredtree.
but both are a bit exp compare to KH.

I’m glad I found this article, I received one month later, almost the same notice from HG shared package. Even I’m using another CMS, I optimised few things to get lower queries, and disabled few things on my website. THe site was back again.

I was algo checking HG vps solutions, and until now, I was almost 100% for it. MT is little to expensive and not full managed if I got it right.
I wil check KH in hope they will have something for me.

    thanks again 4 your article!

  3. I am glad to find this post…I am going through the same EXACT thing with Hostgator right now. During the transfer to VPS they keep suspending my site. What’s weird is that the WP Cache plugin keeps deactivating itself. I am getting NOWHERE, and so frustrated.

I’m glad you were able to find a company you love, and I might make the switch too.

I have the same problem… Hostgator sucks! They sell, but “do not deliver”. My sites shut down all the time. The solution: say goodbye to hostgator..

The story you told about HostGator is absolutely true. I experienced exactly the same problems with them with all my joomla websites. Recently, they started to haunt traffic consumers overloading their servers with more than 300 websites on a single shared plan. Their support changed from excellent to poor.
I switched to KnownHost, I all I can tell is that I forgot about my websites.

  6. haha says:

hahaha, please do go to Knownhost and I will laugh at you all :D
Give me some links so that I can watch when all the websites go down or you loose traffic due to super slow loading sites and close down each domain and i will post each one here.

Every host has limits, you cant expect to have 300 sites and not know anything about hosting or running a website and keep it all running on a $6 plan, hahah.

If you dont know how to manage your website please dont even start one.
I want to see the plan you are using now with Knownhost and how much you are paying for it and the resources they offer, I bet you that they throttle your CPU when you start using too much resources, have fun with that.
